I-189 is a short spur connecting I-89 with US 7 near Burlington. At one time it was planned to continue to downtown Burlington to service an indiustrial area. Construction was delayed due to the presence of a toxic barge canal and cancelled in the 1980s as the city began to favor tourism; a long stub remains of this plan. The city of Burlington wants to revive this stub as a two-lane extension to Home Avenue that would be called the Champlain Parkway. The parkway would then continue to downtown via existing city streets.
