I-390 is a freeway linking Rochester with the Southern Tier. The first section to open, between Wayland and Dansville, was originally part of NY 245. The expressway was considered to be part of NY 401 prior to being designated I-390 in 1973. While its route from I-590 to downtown Rochester was cancelled, it was re-routed onto the "Outer Loop", which was to be entirely I-590 (and was formerly NY 47) to I-490. It is extended by NY 390 to the Lake Ontario State Parkway. At one time, the I-390 designation was to reach NY 104, but this was denied by FHWA.
