New York State Roads - I-690/NY 690 Exit List

I-690 is a freeway connecting the Thruway with downtown Syracuse ending at I-81 (former I-481). At one time it was planned to extend all the way to Chittenango and back to the Thruway; that plan was then scaled back to a short extension to NY 5 before being cancelled. The stub ramps at I-81 are still visible, now leading to a maintenance facility. NY 690 is an extension of I-690 north to Baldwinsville.

At one time I-690 began a mile to the east at the old Thruway exit 39, which ended at a traffic light; the old toll plaza is now a Thruway maintenance building. When exit 39 was moved west a mile, I-690 was extended and had its exits renumbered, though NY 690 did not recieve exit numbers. I-690 also had a traffic light inside the NY 695 exit which was used during the state fair prior to the construction of a flyover ramp in 2020.

I-690 converted to mile-based exit numbers beginning in 2025 as part of the I-81 viaduct project. This project involves extensive work to reconstruct and reconfigure I-690 in downtown, including the construction of the Crouse/Irving interchange, the removal of the Townsend Street interchange, as well as the reconfiguration of the West Street interchange. Improvements were also made to Bear Street in lieu of bulding the "missing movements" between I-690 and BL 81 (former I-81).
