The Lake Ontario State Parkway (reference route 947A) follows the shore of Lake Ontario west of Rochester. The initial section, opened in the early 1950s, ran from Hamlin Beach State Park to NY 261. In 1962, it was extended east to Lake Road in Rochester. At one time it was planned to link with the Robert Moses State Parkway at Fort Niagara; the only part of this extension built, from Hamlin Beach to Lakeside Beach State Park, opened in 1973. Due to the poor condition of the road and low traffic counts in Orleans County, the parkway is seasonally closed west of NY 98 and debate exists about whether to rebuild the road in full, narrow it to two lanes, or remove it entirely west of NY 237.
