NY 12 is a major highway, connecting Binghamton to Utica and Utica to Lowville, Watertown, and the Thousand Islands. It is part of the NY 5/NY 8/NY 12 north-south arterial around Utica. The north-south freeway continues past the interchange where I-790 and NY 5 split off towards the Thruway and Genesee Street, which becomes a divided highway that continues through Remsen to Alder Creek.
