NY 5 has freeway segments in the Buffalo, Syracuse, and Utica areas. In Buffalo it includes the Skyway and has mileposts that begin at the Erie county line. There has been ocassional talk of tearing down the Skyway and replacing the freeway with a surface boulevard, however there are currently no concrete plans to do so. In Syracuse, NY 5 bypasses Camillus and Fairmount and was planned to continue past its stubs on each end, to Auburn to the west and to either downtown Syracuse to the east or I-81 to the south. The mileposts reflect only the existing freeway mileage. In Utica, NY 5 follows the North-South Arterial and I-790.
